Kamui Kobayashi has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the Australian Grand Prix race stewards after he caused a first corner accident.
The Japanese driver looked to have misjudged his breaking point and ploughed into the rear of Felipe Massa, ending both their races.
Massa called for a race ban, claiming Kobayashi’s incident was similar to that of Romain Grosjean’s at Spa in 2012.
The stewards however, upon seeing data from Caterham, sided with Kobayashi after it became apparent that a technical issue was the blame.
“A serious technical failure completely outside the control of the driver’ caused the accident,” said a statement.
Kobayashi apologised to the team and Massa after the race.
“That isn’t how I wanted my first race back to go, and I’m sorry for the team and for Felipe that both our races ended early,” he said.
