Bernie Ecclestone has admitted he’s had enough of the current race organisers running the proposed Grand Prix of America in New Jersey.
Leo Hindery Jr. and Port Imperial Racing Associates (PIRA) are currently in charge of bringing Formula 1 to New Jersey. However the race has been postponed twice due to financial and construction issues.
Ecclestone, who lent the organisers around $10 million to keep the project going as they seek additional investment, says they’re in breach of their contract and he’s looking for someone else to take over.
“I’ve kept it going because somebody might come up and there has been two or three people who are interested and are looking into it,” he’s quoted as saying. “If anyone comes in today, they can have it.
“All it needs is somebody serious to come up and say we will get behind this and make it happen. I have given Hindery too much leeway,” he added. “I wanted to believe that he would do it.”
The race was supposed to debut in 2013, but was delayed until 2014. It was again cut from the calendar and looks unlikely to ever happen, but the 83-year-old says there is “no doubt” it will happen in 2015.
