Ferrari calls meeting to discuss double points

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has summoned bosses from all 11 Formula 1 teams to discuss recent changes, particularly the double points for the final race.

The meeting, scheduled for mid-January, has been organised by the Italian with the sole reason of discussing ways to improve the sport for the fans.

“I have the intention to invite [them all] to Maranello, not to discuss a single point that maybe can give an advantage to one team or another, but to talk about the overall approach to Formula 1,” he said.

He highlighted the recent change to award double points in Abu Dhabi as a particular talking point after fans responded negatively to the plan which he described as “too artificial”.

“There has been this decision to give a lot of points at the last race, but I am not enthusiastic about it,” he added. “It looks too much artificial. We will see.”

Whilst a unanimous vote from all 11 team principals would be enough to reverse the idea, Di Montezemolo says it’s unlikely it’ll change for 2014.

“The best way is to discuss and to do a one year test and then see,” he explained. “Now is too early to say [whether it will change].

“I also don’t want to give the feeling that they [the teams] said yes and now we say no. I personally have some doubts. I said this to [Jean] Todt and I said this to Bernie privately.”
