Young Danish driver Kevin Magnussen is eyeing a Formula 1 seat for 2014 after ticking off the Formula Renault 3.5 Series championship from his CV.
The son of former McLaren and Stewart driver Jan Magnussen took five wins during the 2013 FR3.5 season to take the crown with a 60-point lead over runenr up Stoffel Vandoorne.
He’s currently backed by McLaren who are hopeful of placing him in a Marussia for a year before taking him on as a race driver in ’15 if he’s ready.
The 21-year-old certainly believes he’s ready for the chance.
“I’m very proud about my record in 2013,” he said after finishing on the podium at all but one of the FR3.5 race weekends.
“Now the aim is for Formula 1 next year. That’s what I’ve been aiming at for a long time. The time is now – I’m as ready as you can get.
“Whenever I’m asked about Formula 1, I always reply that, yes, I feel ready. I look at this way: I’ve done everything I could to prove myself in World Series – now it’s up to somebody else to make a decision.”
When asked if he’d accept a test driver role instead of a race seat for ’14, he replied: “No, I need to race – that’s when I can fully prove myself.”
