Next year’s Korean GP 50/50 admits organiser

The organiser of the Korean Grand Prix has admitted its place on the 2014 calendar, which was marked at ‘provisional’, is far from certain.

The event has a contract through to 2016 after they negotiated more favourable terms with Formula 1’s Bernie Ecclestone. Despite this organiser Won-Haw Park is keen to renegotiate a lower fee to ensure it remains on the calendar.

“We want to improve the current contract with Formula One Management,” he said. “We are still negotiating with Mr Ecclestone. We wish to have a satisfactory conclusion,” he told Sky Sports ahead of its fourth running.

When asked about the likelihood of it remaining a feature on the calendar, he replied: “I would say 50/50. But we are very much firm in continuously holding this event.”

One idea Park floated was the idea of running a night race – something 82-year-old Ecclestone would be keen on as the broadcast would hit key markets during peak hours.

“It’s a great idea. We’d be glad to consider to hold it as a night race with certainly better conditions from Mr Ecclestone. This circuit is far from downtown so we do not have any noise problem,” he concluded.
