Tyres changes not behind boring races – Pirelli

Pirelli has dismissed criticism that the changes it made to its tyres this season as a result of the blowouts in Silverstone has resulted in ‘boring racing’.

The company’s motorsport director Paul Hembery said such a notion was “nonsense” and, whilst he doesn’t believe the racing has become boring, it certainly isn’t because of the tyres if it has.

“I thought the German and Hungarian Grands Prix were two of the best races we had ever had in Germany and Hungary – so I think that [complaint] is nonsense,” he responded.

“At the end of the day, Red Bull were leading the championship before and they are leading the championship now. So nothing has changed on that front.

“Red Bull has been on a bit of a roll, but next year there could be a bit of a reset and someone else will gain the momentum.”

Pirelli will however take a less conservative approach with their compound choices in the coming races as it recognises that the teams are beginning to understand them better.

“We are looking to try to do some of the races like we did in China and Melbourne, where the top teams have to use the more aggressive compound to qualify and get track position.

“Then hopefully the teams in Q2 take the option of using the harder tyre to get track position after the first stops.”
