Formula E has unveiled its new car which will kick off the inaugural season of the all-electric motorsport series next year.

FIA president Jean Todt and Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag unveiled the Spark-Renault SRT_01E at the Frankfurt Motor Show on Tuesday.

Several manufacturers have been involved in the project, with Dallara designing and building the monocoque and chassis, McLaren Electronic Systems are behind the electric motor, gearbox and electronics, whilst Williams Advanced Engineering will provide the batteries and battery management system which is capable of producing 200kw (roughly equivalent to 270bhp).

Formula E partner, Renault, will oversee how the systems are integrated, how the performance is optimised and the safety aspects.

Michelin will supply 18-inch treaded tyres in a single compound which is capable of dealing with wet and dry conditions, thus reducing the cost.

Speaking at the launch, Todt said: “I congratulate all partners involved in the production of the fully-electric SRT_01E car – it is a fantastic achievement.

“The innovative technology deployed follows the best environmental practices, highlighting the potential of the Formula E Championship to spark a revolution in the development of new electromobility systems, not just for motorsport but also for everyday use. This new championship builds on the FIA’s traditional role as a leading promoter of innovation, technology and performance in the automotive sector.”

In 2014, the car will be used by all 10 teams, therefore 40 of these will compete each weekend, with each driver using two cars per race due to the limit on battery life.

From 2015 and beyond, it will be opened up to allow customer cars to compete.
