Mexican driver Sergio Perez says he’s excited by the possibility of having a home race in 2014 after a provisional calendar was released on Thursday and included Mexico.
The calendar hasn’t yet been confirmed, something the McLaren driver was keen to express, but he believes it will happen.
“I’m very happy, very excited,” he said. “I mean it’s not confirmed yet – it’s just a pre-calendar – but I see a very big chance of this happening. I think it will be great for my country, great for the sport and Formula One will be amazed if it happens at how popular this grand prix can become after just a single race.
“I think the people in Mexico are really looking forward and are very enthusiastic about it. It will just be fantastic news for my whole country; I really hope it happens.”
He also revealed that he was fully aware of the country’s intentions to return and even says he’s had some involvement in the project.
“I’ve been involved and I know they’re making very good progress. Everyone is trying so hard – fans, media, sponsors – everyone is really trying to make it because we all know how good it can be for our country. Daily, outside Mexico people are always talking about how bad Mexico is, how dangerous it is, so I think it’s a great opportunity for us as a country to show the world how good we can be and how good we are.
“I think [Mexico City] is definitely the right place. The infrastructure is amazing; there are a lot of people so I think in terms of a package it is the best place where you can have a race.”
