Bernie Ecclestone has dismissed Michelin’s interest in becoming Formula 1’s tyre supplier for 2014, either in a sole capacity or to compete against Pirelli.
The French manufacturer has signalled its interest after admitting it has held discussions with the FIA, but Ecclestone insists the final decision doesn’t rest with them.
“FOM and Pirelli have a contract,” Ecclestone told Speed. “We don’t need [a contract with the FIA], I don’t think. They are nothing to do with commercial. The FIA’s position is that they are regulators. They regulate all the regulations that have been agreed.”
He also dismissed the idea of another tyre war between the two companies.
“They will want to pick the teams that they think will win, and they’ll pay them a lot more money to take them as opposed to somebody else.
“We have a deal with Pirelli, anyway.”
