McLaren’s young driver Kevin Magnussen topped the times on the first day of the Silverstone test with a 1:33.602.
The Danish driver put the MP4-28 top with a lap on the medium tyres after lunch and remained there unbeaten until the end.
All but Force India and Marussia ran young drivers rather than current drivers. Paul di Resta came in second just over a tenth behind Magnussen and Marussia’s Max Chilton was 12th, almost five seconds down.
Red Bull’s Antonio Felix da Costa was third fastest ahead of the morning leader James Calado who handed over his Force India to di Resta in the evening.
Alexander Rossi was the only driver to suffer a problem when his Caterham stopped on circuit unexpectedly.
