A rare Mercedes W196 driven by five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio, will be auctioned off at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and is expected to fetch more than £10 million.
Auctioneers Bonhams believe the car could break the record set by a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Prototype which was sold for just over £10 million in 2011.
The W196 is one of just a few remaining and the only one in the hands of a private collector. The remaining few examples are owned by Mercedes.
The chassis number, 00006/54, was driven by Fangio to victory twice at the 1954 German and Swiss Grands Prix and helped him secure the championship that year.
Team-mate Karl Kling also got behind the wheel at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix in Monza but suffered gearbox failure.
A spokeswoman for Bonhams said: “This is the only Mercedes-Benz W196 in private hands. It is the only surviving Mercedes-Benz W196 to have won not just one grand prix, but two.
“Its stature is immense, not only as the iconic Fangio car of the 1950s, but also as a shining star of pinnacle Mercedes-Benz engineering and as an icon of post-war recovery.”
