All cameramen have been banned from the pit lane during qualifying and the race and will be forced to stand on the pit wall, according to Bernie Ecclestone.

It follows an incident at the German Grand Prix where Formula One Management (FOM) cameraman Paul Allen was struck by a loose wheel which came off Mark Webber’s Red Bull.

Allen suffered a broken collarbone and two cracked ribs, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Speaking about what could be done, Ecclestone revealed that his cameramen, of which six are allowed unlimited pit lane access at any one time, will have to film from the pit wall in future alongside photographers.

“I’ve been in close contact with everybody who has been dealing with the matter,” he said. “It’s a terrible thing to say, but it was just one of those things. There was a whole bunch of mechanics and the tyre could have hit any one of those guys.

“The cameraman just happened to be looking the wrong way at the wrong time. In future, all our camera crews will only be allowed to film from the pit wall.”

There has also been suggestions that all those working in the pits should be forced to wear helmets should a similar incident occur.
