The World Motor Sport Council has approved a number of regulations changes relating to the new power units and gearboxes for 2014.
As previously announced, but only now approved, only five power units will be made available to each driver next season, when the new 1.6l V6 engines are introduced.
Should a driver require an entirely new unit outside of their allocated five, they will be forced to start from the pit lane.
However, should only one element of the power unit require changing, such as the turbocharger, MGU or energy system, that will result in a 10-place drop.
Only one power unit may be homologated between 2014 and 2020 and changes to that homologated unit will be permitted on the grounds of safety, cost saving, reliability and ease of installation.
Gearboxes must last a minimum of six consecutive races, an increase from the current five, and will incur a grid penalty if changed before then.
