Fernando Alonso set the quickest lap on Friday morning in Spain in front of his home crowd, just ahead of team-mate Felipe Massa.
The damp weather made things difficult for the teams as they tried to get to grips with the latest upgrades and the new hard tyres which weren’t an option until the closing minutes as the track dried.
It was Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne who braved the slicks first and his gamble paid off as he went third fastest ahead of Romain Grosjean and Adrian Sutil.
The Red Bull duo didn’t bother with any competitive running, whilst Jenson Button went out for a handful of ‘exploratory’ laps in the updated McLaren.
