The Grand Prix of America, which is set to debut on the calendar in 2014 with a race on the streets of New Jersey, was given a boost on Thursday with the appointment of Chris Pook to special assistant of chairman Leo Hindery Jr.

Pook has decades of experience having founded and managed the Long Beach GP – the first F1 street race in the US – on the streets of Los Angeles. He was also key in organising races in Detroit and Las Vegas.

The race, which was postponed until 2014 due to financial troubles, looked to be on the ropes following several key departures from the board. This latest news will come as a relief to fans wanting to attend the race next season.

“I am happy to be working with Chris again after some 20 years,” said Bernie Ecclestone. “Chris has a history of great success in Formula One, which I’m confident he’ll bring to the Grand Prix of America race.

“We look forward to working with him to bring F1 racing to New Jersey and New York.”

Promoter Hindery added: “The F1 Grand Prix of America at Port Imperial just gained another invaluable team member who will ensure the race will be like nothing the region has ever witnessed.”
