Felipe Massa has admitted he was one of the voices behind the push for Pirelli to change the hard compound tyre.
This weekend will see the new hard compound tyres debut after Pirelli tweaked its durability by returning to the 2012-spec compound following complaints.
Whilst Red Bull was one of the most vocal campaigners, the Brazilian admits he too backed the change.
“To be honest, I also complained that what they [Pirelli] need to do is change the hard tyres,” he said on Thursday in Spain.
“That is what they did and it was a good decision.”
It’s believed Red Bull will be the biggest benefactor of the change, but Massa says that won’t be certain until Friday practice at the earliest.
“Who will be better or worse is difficult to say; we need to wait and see tomorrow,” he added.
“The [previous] hard compound was not really like a hard compound.
“The gap was not like a hard compound and the degradation was maybe worse than a medium.”
