Marko still unhappy with tyres despite change

Red Bull’s Helmut Marko is still unhappy with the tyre situation, despite Pirelli’s changes to the hard compound for the Spanish Grand Prix onwards.

The Italian supplier caved into pressure put on it by the Milton Keynes based outfit – which was the only team to officially request a change, whilst eight others supported the present tyre situation.

However the changes it has made haven’t gone far enough, according to Marko, who says the tyre situation is limiting their potential.

“We want a tyre that does not restrict our potential,” he is quoted by Motorsport-Magazin as saying.

“You should be able to get the optimum out of the car and currently it is a compromise. We have to adjust the car so that you can make as few pit stops as possible.

“We have two top drivers, which is not cheap. Then you have to tell them that they cannot drive flat out through some corners, which is not easy. This distorts competition.”

Despite Red Bull leading both championships, he believes, on these tyres, the Lotus car looks like the best all-rounder.

“The tyre is unpredictable and some cars handle the situation better than others. Lotus appears to be fast on all circuits,” he added.
