Ferrari not concerned by lack of ’14 tyre supply

Ferrari aren’t concerned by the lack of a tyre supplier for the 2014 season and beyond – with current supplier Pirelli yet to sign a new deal.

Pirelli have signalled that they are keen to continue for at least another three seasons, but the FIA has yet to put an agreement in place, or look for alternatives.

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali believes it extremely unlikely that they will find themselves without tyres next year.

“For sure we cannot run without tyres unless we go back to the Flinstone’s time,” he is quoted as saying by Autosport.

“That is a situation that honestly I don’t think will happen.

“[If] there is no alternative we will find very soon a solution and I am sure that Pirelli has already given the sign that it wants to be here in the future.

“That’s positive, because no tyres, no championship! I’m confident that in the next couple of weeks this situation will be sorted out.”

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery recently told The F1 Times Magazine that he had hoped a decision would be made in the opening months of the season, with June being the deadline.

“We have always said that we saw Formula One as a medium-term project,” Hembery said.

“For everyone’s benefit this should be sorted out as soon as possible, ideally in the first three months of this season, even though in theory there is time until June before a new contract has to be announced.”
