Lewis Hamilton may have ended his second practice session for the Australian Grand Prix in the gravel trap, but the pace his W04 showed before the incident was enough to excite him.
The former-McLaren driver was thrilled to see his new team-mate Nico Rosberg toward the top of the times, despite troubles for both of them.
“Overall it was a good day, if perhaps not the smoothest,” he admitted. “I’m happy with where we are and to see Nico in third place on the timesheets shows that we’re pretty competitive.
“I’m massively excited to be up there when you look at the times.”
He believes their performance will silence those who criticised his decision to switch teams.
“Obviously over the years I’ve always been kind of up there and to think I’ve made this big step and people were talking it down and talking it up really not knowing what was going to happen.
“To be as competitive as we are today is a real plus,” he added. “That’s a reflection of a great job that everyone has done at the factory and here at the track. I’m looking forward to the rest of the weekend.”
