Lotus team principal Eric Boullier admits he saved Romain Grosjean from being axed at the Enstone outfit following an error strewn season.
Grosjean, who was handed a one-race ban – the first since 1994 – for causing a first corner pile-up at the Belgian Grand Prix, failed to finish seven races due to incidents.
Boullier, who is also the Frenchman’s manager, says he deserves another chance, but he must learn quickly.
“This is a boy who has the privilege of being one of the fastest drivers in the world,” he told Le Figaro.
“This is an uncompromising world that does not allow many mistakes. He still has to learn, but he must do so quickly.”
Boullier even admitted that had he not been the boss, considering their relationship, it’s unlikely another team principal would have retained him.
“I think if I had not been here, he would not be here today,” he added.
Grosjean also acknowledged the support he has had from Boullier.
“We have a mutual trust, but he is my boss. And because of that, he cannot defend me forever,” said the 26-year-old. “I do know he did a lot for me to be here.”
