Pirelli: Teams ready for softer tyres in ’13

Pirelli will once again soften its compounds for 2013 in a bid to repeat the unpredictability of the last season which saw seven different winners in the opening seven races.

Whilst some have called for the tyre supplier to keep its compounds similar to their current spec, Pirelli believe the teams are ready for a new challenge having overcome the early struggles.

“During 2012, more or less all the teams learned much better how to use our tyres,” Maurizio Boicchi, chief technical officer at Pirelli, told Autosport.

“One of the key criteria that improved their consistency was the fact that we have seen and measured much less [wheel] spinning from them – which means they have learned how to manage this phenomenon.

“It is terrible, as you wear the tyres fast, heat them up and they degrade very, very rapidly,” he explained.

With that under control, he believes the teams will be able to better understand a range of softer tyres in order to ensure the racing remains exciting – as toward the end of 2012, one-stop races became the norm.

“We believe a lot of things have moved in this direction, and what we would like to do in 2013 is to come back to be a little bit more aggressive in our compound choice in order to introduce more pitstops and strategy for the teams.”
