Ferrari disappointed with Schumacher in Brazil

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo says he had expected more of Michael Schumacher in Brazil, after he appeared to move over for Sebastian Vettel.

Schumacher, who drove for Ferrari between 1996 and 2006, winning five titles with the Italian team, allowed his fellow countryman though as Vettel fought back from last place having spun at the start of the race.

Montezemolo, when asked about the ‘gifted move’, says he expected more from Schumacher considering his history with the team.

“I was expecting a slighty different final race on the part of Michael Schumacher because he is a driver with links to Ferrari through some extraordinary moments and with whom we feel very close,” said the outspoken Italian.

Whilst Schumacher has been criticised by others for the move, his brother Ralf Schumacher and Pirelli test driver Jaime Alguersuari defended the 43-year-old.

“Sebastian was faster and he didn’t want to get in the way and increase the risk for him. That’s how fair sports people treat each other,” said his brother.

Alguersuari says he would have done the same for his fellow countryman Fernando Alonso had he been in a similar situation.

“I would have liked to drive a Mercedes in Sao Paulo and let Alonso pass to help with his third world title,” said the Spaniard. “Someday, Fernando can benefit from the same circumstances that benefitted Vettel.”
