Rubens Barrichello believes Williams are paying the price for fielding such an inexperienced driver line-up in the form of Pastor Maldonado and Bruno Senna.
The Grove outfit currently sits 21 points behind Force India in eighth, but former driver Barrichello believes they should have at least double that amount, which would promote them to sixth behind Mercedes.
The Brazilian, speaking to Radio Jovem Pan, blamed the inexperience of Maldonado and Senna, both of whom have less than two full seasons of experience behind them.
“The truth is that the car proved to be very competitive,” he said. “They [Williams] made a good job with that to put the car many positions ahead on the grid [compared to 2011].
“And it is a shame, because I believe that they should have, at least, double the number of points that they in fact have.
“This happens of course because of the inexperience of the drivers – who are fast, but don’t know how to get the chances that the equipment they have in their hands provides them.”
When asked if they would do better to have him in the car, Barrichello replied: “This kind of thought cannot exist, because I am not driving the car and I cannot think what could be or couldn’t be with me there.”
