Ecclestone willing to fund a London GP

Bernie Ecclestone has hinted that he may be willing to fund a London Grand Prix following a promotional event by Santander which is set to unveil a CGI video realising what such a race would look like.

This comes just a week after plans surfaced for a race around the Olympic stadium and park once the London 2012 games have finished.

Ecclestone fully supports the idea of a race around the capital which he believes would be more beneficial to the economy than the Olympics, even suggesting he would support it financially.

“With the way things are, maybe we would front it and put the money up for it,” the Times newspaper quote him as saying. “If we got the okay and everything was fine, I think we could do that.

“Think what it would do for tourism. It would be fantastic, good for London, good for England – a lot better than the Olympics.”

The route, a three-mile track passing landmarks such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and many more, would attract record crowds of over 150,000 according to the report.

Speaking about the idea, London mayor Boris Johnson said he was “broadly positive.”

“I am always interested in projects that attract jobs and bring growth,” he said, adding: “The question of air quality and noise impact will have to be looked at. I am broadly positive providing we can satisfy the air quality and noise issues.”

The race would be in addition to the current British GP held at Silverstone which has a long-term contract.
