The 2012 Formula 1 season has seen a record seven different race winners in seven races, by five constructors.

It’s had unexpected results with Sergio Perez claiming second in Malaysia and third in Canada, whilst Pastor Maldonado put Williams on the top step of the podium once again for the first time since the 2004 Brazilian GP.

These are just a few of the surprises witnessed during what Bernie Ecclestone has described as the most exciting season he’s ever witnessed.

“In all my years in this business I’ve never known anything like it,” he told the Gulf News. “It’s historic.”

He added: “Every grand prix has given us something extra special to applaud and be excited about.

“The whole show, evidenced by the massive TV audiences right across the world, as well as the sellout circuit attendances, proves that we are on a winner of a championship right now.”

The championship standings reflect what an exciting season it has been so far. Lewis Hamilton leads by just two points to Fernando Alonso who’s a single point ahead of Sebastian Vettel. The top five are covered by less than a race win.

The 81-year-old is certain that we can expect many more surprises in the following 13 races.

“I wonder how many more surprises we are in for before the end of the season,” he added. “I hope my old heart can stand it. We are not even at the halfway mark yet and the lead in the drivers’ championship is swapping all the time.

“There’s a lot more fun and drama to come before the end of the season. That’s a guarantee.”
