Lewis Hamilton looks to be the man to beat in Montreal after topping both Friday practice sessions for the Canadian Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver set a best laptime of 1:15.259 to finish just half a tenth ahead of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, with both improving in their FP1 times.

Alonso’s team-mate Felipe Massa finished a further tenth back ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Paul di Resta who completed the top five runners.

The session was a dramatic one with several drivers taking minor off-track excursions, including an impressive 360º spin from Alonso across the grass at T8.

The session was red flagged following Bruno Senna’s crash.

The biggest incident came with some 30 minutes left on the clock as Bruno Senna lost the rear of his Williams FW34 at the final chicane resulting in him hitting the ‘Wall of Champions’ with some force, badly damaging his car and pausing the session with a red flag.

Meanwhile Jenson Button had to wait until the dying minutes to get on track after the team changed his gearbox during the session.
