Fernando Alonso took a sensational victory in the Malaysian Grand Prix to hand him the lead of the World Championship.
The Ferrari driver gained several places from what was a chaotic race which was stopped after just eight laps thanks to a heavy thunderstorm which flooded the track, but later restarted after a lengthly delay.
If Alonso’s win wasn’t surprising enough, Sergio Perez finished second in his Sauber after challenging for the win on many occasions, but a late mistake ended his battle with the Spaniard.
Lewis Hamilton will once again be disappointed that he couldn’t secure victory from pole position and finally finished third.
His team-mate Jenson Button failed to score after contact with the HRT of Narain Karthikeyan, whilst Sebastian Vettel retired after he also made contact with a HRT.
Williams scored their debut points thanks to Bruno Senna’s sixth place, picking up eight points – more than they scored throughout 2011.
