The F1 Times gambling contest between Ryan Wood (Editor) and Daniel Chalmers (Feature Editor) heads to the second round in Malaysia.

To remind you of the rules both men have a budget of £5 to spend on a maximum of 3 different bets relating to the upcoming event. The deadline for these bets to be placed is before the start of the first Friday practice session.

At the end of the season the winner will be the person who has made the most profit, or made the lowest loss.

Round 2 Malaysia

Ryan Wood

1. Pastor Maldonado to finish in the top 6 at 9-1 – £2.00 stake

Had he not binned it on the final lap in Australia, Maldonado would have finished sixth and could possibly have stolen fifth from Fernando Alonso. He was clearly quicker but overtaking is difficult around Albert Park – it’s easier in Malaysia. It may have been a one-off, but I’ve faith in the Venezuelan. Williams have built a solid car with a decent engine and I think this track could suit them.

2. Lewis Hamilton to do the triple, pole, win and fastest lap at 8-1 – £2.00 stake

He got pole in Australia, but he faltered on the line and finished P3. He’ll be wanting to prove himself especially after being beaten by his teammate. It’s a bit of a shot in the dark, but I think the McLaren will be quicker in Malaysia, though I do expect Red Bull to challenge them more closely on Saturday.

3. Heikki Kovalainen to finish in the points at 20-1 – £1.00 stake

This one is definitely a brave bet. They’ve got to get lucky and score a point soon. They both retired in Australia, but I’m hoping some reliability will allow Caterham to impress, particularly Kovalainen.

They’re slightly closer to the mid-field, and it’ll take a few retirements or issues at a few other teams for them to score points, but at 20/1, the odds aren’t too bad and would give a good return.

Daniel Chalmers

1. Nico Rosberg to take pole position at 12-1 – £2.00 stake

Mercedes showed in Melbourne that they are much stronger this year. Their race pace isn’t particularly great as the W03 is very hard on its tyres. However in qualifying trim the car is extremely quick. Mercedes’ new version of the F-Duct (let’s call it super DRS) is clearly very beneficial and gives a nice straight-line speed advantage. In Sepang it will be even more advantageous as there are three long straights.

They were only four tenths off pole in Melbourne, and I think they will be in closer contention this Saturday, with the extra gains their super DRS will bring at this track.

2. Kimi Raikkonen to win the race at 25-1 – £1.00 each way

I think Lotus is going to be the revelation of the weekend so had to put a bet on them for this race. The team didn’t have a clean weekend in Melbourne, so the true extent of their pace wasn’t clear to everyone.

However Romain Grosjean showed that the car has got great raw pace by qualifying third. We never got to see what Kimi might have done due to his Q1 exit.

When he was in clean air during the race he was mighty. Using lap 14 as an example he was actually quicker than both McLarens. As long as Raikkonen has a better qualifying I think he will be right up there in contention. The characteristics of Sepang should also suit the car, as they have a strong aerodynamic package.

3. Daniel Ricciardo to finish in the top 6 at 14-1 – £1.00 stake

In Melbourne Toro Rosso proved that they had a strong car that could challenge for points on a regular basis. Daniel did really well to score two points for the team on his debut for the squad. He just needs to finish three positions higher up this weekend to give me a nice return.

Pastor Maldonado was fighting with Alonso for fifth last weekend. If Toro Rosso and Daniel combine to have a strong weekend there is no reason why they can’t achieve the same feat (but hopefully not retire on the last lap). The order of the midfield will change race by race and fingers crossed Toro Rosso will be at the front of it this weekend.

If the predicted rain arrives in the race, that could also help Ricciardo’s chances.
