The Virgin Racing outfit has officially lodged a request to change the teams name to Marussia, reflecting the Russian sportscar manufacturers ownership stake in the team.
The outfit, which entered the sport in 2010, has become the third team to request a name change for 2012, as Team Lotus looks to become Caterham, whilst Renault will adopt the Lotus moniker.
The request will be put forward before the Formula One Commission which will have the final say.
Marussia took a majority stake in the team last year, which saw the team become Marussia Virgin Racing, whilst the team adopted a Russian racing license – meaning the Russian anthem would play if the team achieved a race win.
Virgin will remain a sponsor of the team but will no longer be a feature of the team name, if 18 members of the 26-strong commission vote in favour.
