The mayor of West New York has confirmed plans for Formula 1 to visit New Jersey in 2013, with an official announcement expected later today [Tuesday].
“This is going to be an economic boom for this whole region,” Mayor Felix Roque told Reuters. “While political and public servants talk about creating jobs, the governor has put the pedal to the metal and delivered.
“This is the top of the line in motor racing, it’s incredible,” he added.
An official press conference is scheduled for later today with New Jersey mayor, Chris Christie, expected to confirm the news.
It is claimed the circuit will include part of a four-lane motorway that runs alongside the Hudson River in Weehawken.
Joe DeMarco, an attorney with the West New York office, expects the circuit to feel like a mix of Monaco and Spa, with the Manhattan skyline in the distance.
“It will provide a very challenging course,” said DeMarco. “They compare it to Spa in Belgium but it will have the feel of Monaco.”
He confirmed plans for a minimum ten-year contract, but hoped it would continue for many more years.
“It has been contemplated to at least run for ten years but there are options and so on depending on the success of it. Hopefully it will be a long term event, embraced by residents and the community.”
