Anthony Hamilton says his son has turned a corner following a difficult period, which has seen him downbeat and unable to match his teammate, Jenson Button.
Lewis Hamilton has made contact with several drivers which have ended or hindered his chances of reaching the podium. Recently, the 26-year-old made contact with Felipe Massa on two occasions, which have seen him come under massive criticism from the media and in particular the Brazilian.
The McLaren driver currently sits fifth, 26 points behind Button, 16 behind Fernando Alonso and 13 behind Mark Webber, but he’s managed to close the gap to all three at the last race in Korea after finishing second.
That is the first sign that Hamilton is turning a corner, according to his father.
“He’s turned a corner in everything he’s done, his lifestyle and his love of motorsport,” Hamilton Snr told the BBC.
“You’ve not seen Lewis Hamilton yet, you’ve seen a young Lewis Hamilton. Now a new Lewis Hamilton is coming,” he added.
“Lewis is an extremely talented individual and I tell you what, most of us would not have been able to come back from what he has had to face this year.
“There’s only so much [negative criticism] that one person can take.”
It’s been widely reported that Hamilton’s rumoured break-up with Nicole Scherzinger may be the cause of his negative vibes, but Anthony believes his son can come back from anything, as shown last weekend.
“I think in Korea, he showed just how much of a champion he is, not just as a racing driver but as an individual.
“Let’s face it, he’s had a tough year, he’s faced a lot of criticism and yet still he comes back fighting and can produce results that he did last week.
“He’s an incredible man and an inspiration to so many people.”
