The new pit and paddock complex at the Silverstone circuit, dubbed ‘The Wing’ because of its unique shape, has been nominated for a prestigious global architecture award.
The facility, which was opened earlier this year, is vying for ‘World Building of the Year 2011′ in the sports’ category and is up against eight others, including the Al Shaqab Equestrian Arena in Qatar and the Sports Hall ‘On the hill’ in Poland, among others.
Judges from the World Architecture Festival Awards will meet in Barcelona later in the year to decide the winner.
“It has already become a pioneering landmark and a symbol of Silverstone,” said John Barrow of Populous, the architects who designed the structure. “We’re very proud to have improved one of the greatest circuits in the world and the home of British motor racing.”
