Former-Ferrari driver, Eddie Irvine, has insisted that Michael Schumacher’s return is a “waste of time” and that Mercedes are simply pouring money away by keeping him in contract.
“Schumacher is good but no longer good enough he was already on the decline in 2005 and 2006 at Ferrari,” the Irish man told Germany’s Der Spiegal newspaper
“I have no idea why Mercedes invests in such an old driver as the performance curve can only be downwards. He’s too old now to beat the top drivers like Nico Rosberg,” added Irvine.
The comments come despite a fantastic race last weekend at Monza, Italy which saw the 7-time World champion finish the race in 5th.
Schumacher started to show some of his “old self” as he battled with McLaren boys, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, the latter of which took 27-laps to overtake the German veteran.
