Fernando Alonso has conceded that the 2011 title is now an impossible task, despite moving into second place after finishing third on Sunday.
The Spaniard is now 112 points behind Sebastian Vettel, who can win his second title at the next race in Singapore if he finishes first and Alonso finishes fourth or worst with Jenson Button and Mark Webber off the podium.
“Yeah, six races to go so obviously the championship is impossible,” he told Adam Cooper. “Not mathematically but we are no longer in contention, so we try to enjoy every race.”
The double-world champion now says the aim is to finish second, as he did in 2010 when Vettel took his maiden title.
“We try to go for individual victories, also fighting for second place in the championship,” he said. “It’s always better to finish second than fifth. I think I’m second today after Mark’s retirement, so I will try to get second place as I did last year.”
