Silverstone took another big step toward securing its long-term future as the home of British motorsport today.
With the announcement of a 17-year deal to host Formula 1 in 2009 and the introduction of MotoGP, the circuit has already seen extensive upgrades to its pit, paddock and track.
The latest raft of developments go much further though. Planning has been submitted to the Aylesbury Vale District Council and South Northamptonshire’s District Council to secure permission to expand its business park.
It includes; Office space, a Technology park, Education campus, Three hotels, Ancillary retail and spectator facilities including a ‘Welcome Centre’ and ‘Museum of Motor Sport’. More entertainment will also be available with a kartin track, outdoor stage, permanent grandstands, extensive landscaping and more tunnels to improve pedestrian flows.
The developments are expected to create around 8,400 extra jobs in the surrounding businesses, with 4,800 of those directly employes in the new area at the circuit.
“The submission of this planning application is a big step forward in releasing the commercial potential of Silverstone and its 760 acre Estate,” said Stuart Rolt, Chairman of the British Racing Drivers’ Club. “The timing of this planning application is closely linked into the process we are currently undergoing to seek potential investment from third parties that will enable us to move forward with our plans more rapidly.”
Richard Phillips, Managing Director of Silverstone Holdings Ltd, added: “This is the most important initiative that Silverstone has taken in its 60 year history. Things have changed dramatically since the early days. Approval of this planning application will help maintain Silverstone’s position as a leading global centre for sport, leisure, education and technology and support its vision of becoming a World leading motor sport destination.”
