Fernando Alonso would be leading the championship by a huge margin if he were driving the RB7, that’s the bold statement from former-Renault team principal, Flavio Briatore.
The 61-year-old, who is also Alonso’s manager, believes the Spaniard is the best driver in the world having won two titles at just 30 years of age.
Many consider Michael Schumacher to be the greatest, and indeed the two share many comparisons, having both won two titles by the age of 26, before joining Ferrari. Briatore however, says Alonso is a ‘little’ bit better than even Schumacher.
“Fernando deserves to be the best driver in history. He has decided to be with Ferrari until the end of his career and I hope he can get the cars to win more titles than Schumacher,” he told Onda Cero.
“They are two totally different drivers. Fernando is a little better, because when Michael becomes depressed, he falls back, while in the same situation Fernando’s concentration sharpens.
“If he had the current Red Bull, Fernando would be winning by a huge margin. He is one of the few great drivers along with Senna, Prost and Schumacher.”
