Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber were called to the stewards office after they were found to have used the drag-reduction-system (DRS) during practice.
The system should have been disengaged due to the weather conditions – any session deemed wet, results in the system being disabled – but both Hamilton and Webber were able to use it illegally because they ran slicks which essentially tricked the computer.
Hamilton however confirmed that they were called up to discuss the matter and to clarify the situation, rather than to face punishment.
“The reason I went to the stewards was to discuss the correct usage of DRS in wet conditions: the rules don’t clearly state whether you can use DRS on slicks in wet conditions, which is what we did this morning,” he said.
“The stewards just wanted to understand so that they could tighten the wording of the regulations for the next race. I also suggested a couple of tweaks to make the regulations clearer and safer, so it was quite a useful visit.”
