The home of the British Grand Prix is set for another major upgrade following a recent redevelopment to the track and pit/paddock complex.
The new ‘Arena’ section opened in 2010 with the new ‘Wing’ building debuting this year. It cost £28 million and took just under two years to finish.
Despite Bernie Ecclestone declaring the new facility ‘world class’, the tracks owners are planning a third major upgrade phase which will see permanent grandstands, hotels, a karting track, car showrooms and music venues to compliment the racing.
The plans (which can be seen below) are set to be signed off by the Silverstone board this week, before final approval from the local council later in the year.
Richard Phillips, managing director, warned that the works wouldn’t happen ‘overnight’ as they’re still seeking investors.
“It won’t happen overnight and it will require funding,” he said. “We’ve improved viewing, we have improved grandstands and there are a lot of things we have done right. But we have still got a lot more to do in terms of really creating the atmosphere that is required.
“You are competing in the leisure market and it is quite competitive out there – there is some really good stuff. We have to be up there with it.”
