Red Bull set to introduce significant KERS fix

Red Bull are confident that their KERS issues will be resolved in the coming races as they look to introduce a ‘significant’ upgrade to the device.

It became apparent that the Red Bull system, designed in conjunction with Magneti Marelli and Renault, gives a power boost of just 40kw, compared to the 60kw from Ferrari and Mercedes systems.

The idea behind the smaller boost is that the system can be much smaller, lighter, use less bulky batteries and can therefore fit the tightly packaged RB7.

Though this has created its own issues, revolving around the cooling of the device which is spread throughout the car. The team at their base in Milton Keynes have been working hard to resolve the issues which have plagued the team, often meaning either Sebastian Vettel or Mark Webber are unable to utilise the system to its full extent.

Team principal Christian Horner is confident the problems will be fixed after they achieved 100% reliability during last weekend’s race, though Webber was without the system during qualifying.

“It’s still something that we’re working hard on,” he said. “We are getting better with it and we’ve got fixes that are significant fixes coming up for the next grands prix.

“The fact that we were able to use the system throughout the [Canadian] grand prix is already progress from two months ago.”
