Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn has denied speculation that Michael Schumacher is set to sign a contract extension, which would see him remain with the Brackley-based outfit past 2012.
Comments made to RTL by the seven-time champion prompted talks that he is looking to stay with the team past his current contract, which expires at the end of next year.
“It takes time. Red Bull needed four or five years [to start winning]. With Ferrari that period lasted for five years. We cannot play with magic and do it in half a year,” he said, hinting that he is willing to stay on.
Brawn though says the comments have been blown out of proportion, and currently no talks are underway, but he admitted that such talks could take place if they start to see better results.
“There was absolutely no reason to drive that speculation. The situation has not changed,” he told Sky in regards to his contract expiring in 2012.
“I am very happy with our two drivers – they are not the reason we are not winning races. Both our drivers have contracts at the moment and our priority is to make the car better.
“We definitely have another year with Michael and if with next year’s car we can get the results we want, then I see no reason why we shouldn’t go on. But at the moment there are no talks.”
