Paul di Resta believes he would have scored points in his debut Monaco Grand Prix had it not been for a costly and ‘ambitious’ move which resulted in a penalty.
The Force India driver made a lunge up the inside of Jaime Alguersuari at the tight hairpin but the outcome wasn’t what the Scotsman had expected.
The two collided and significant damage was done to Di Resta’s front-wing, if that wasn’t bad enough, he was then given a drive-through penalty to compound his poor afternoon.
“I think it was all running quite smoothly to begin with and our strategy seemed to be going well,” he said after the race. “After my first pit stop the team told me that to make the strategy work I needed to pass Alguersuari so I tried to overtake him at the hairpin.
“That’s when I made contact and damaged my front wing, which is why I had to make an early second stop.”
The 25-year-old took blame for the incident, one he regrets.
“I have to hold my hands up for this accident because I was probably a bit too ambitious. It’s a shame because the car was working well and without this incident I think I could have scored some points.”
He finally finished in 12th position, just two shy of a point.
