Flavio Briatore, the former team principal of Benetton and Renault, has spoken out about the treatment of his driver, Mark Webber, at Red Bull.
The Italian questioned Webber’s role within the team, highlighting the fact that when any bad luck strikes, it’s more often than not on Webber’s side of the garage.
“Every time there is a problem, it is with Webber, and although in life you have to be lucky, it’s strange when all you get is bad luck,” he told AS.
“I think that team is big enough for both drivers to have equal opportunities,” he added.
Briatore is of the impression that Webber isn’t being given the same treatment as team favourite Sebastian Vettel, urging the Austrian outfit to give him equal footing to compete.
“I believe unquestionably in [Christian] Horner’s equality, but Webber needs to be able to compete in order to challenge for the title, for the spectacle, like Prost and Sennadid.
“Maybe they think it’s better to have a clear first driver. I always had a number one and number two with a chance of being competitive and working together fairly. This works better than having a number one and number two working for themselves only.
“Except with Fernando and Schumacher, I never counted on one driver only,” he concluded.
