Mark Webber remained atop the timesheet in Spain during second practice, but only just pipped McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton by just under four hundredths of a second.
The teams concentrated on setting qualifying spec laps as the session drew to a close. Sebastian Vettel was the first to set a truly competitive laptime before being overtaken by his team-mate.
As the session entered the final 30 minutes, Hamilton jumped to second with Jenson Button going fourth.
Fernando Alonso went fifth quickest, a slot he is familiar with having qualified fifth at every race this season.
Mercedes were once again in the mix, with Michael Schumacher four tenths down on Nico Rosberg in P7.
There weren’t many major issues during the 90 minute window. Hamilton made a minor error running wide at turn seven, as did Timo Glock and Sergio Perez.
