Montoya: Vettel deserves title despite errors

Juan Pablo Montoya says Sebastian Vettel deserved the title despite ‘doing everything possible not to win it.’

The ex-McLaren, now NASCAR driver, is a good friend of the young German and believes he was the quickest driver at the best team, which allowed them to overcome many complications to secure both titles.

“He [Vettel] deserves it because he’s got talent and although he did everything possible not to win the title, he ended up the champion,” said Montoya.

“He and his team made many mistakes and that made things very complicated for them, but I think he won because he’s the fastest driver at the best team.”

The 35-year-old also took the time to rest any rumours that he may return to Formula One, whilst admitting the sport needed to change to allow for more overtaking, urging people to stop blaming the tracks.

“Some people tell me I should go back to F1, but I’m happy. I think it is clear that there is no chance of going the other way for now,” he added.

“I got to see the final of Formula One and the truth is the same for all these years. A car is a second faster than another then it cannot pass. They say the problem is the tracks, but honestly, F1 has always been that way.”
