McLaren were the best value team of the 2010 season according to Formula Money, which publishes an annual report detailing the financial side of the sport.

The Woking based team’s budget of £135 million ($210m) for the 2010 season bought them 454 points or, £295,000 ($460k) per point.

Red Bull came in second, managing to score 498 points from their £170m ($265m) budget, meaning they spent £340k ($530k) per point.

Ferrari’s massive budget of £250m ($390m) resulted in 396 points which works out at £630k ($990k) each, more than double what McLaren invested per point.

The British team’s title sponsor, Vodafone, also did well in 2010. The telecom giant spent £40m ($65m) for the privilege of having their logo adorned on the MP4-25 as well as trackside advertising, however, thanks to McLaren’s success, the cars featured heavily during broadcasts and gave Vodafone significant exposure to an audience of 520 million during the season.

According to Formula Money, the time Vodafone’s logo spent on TV would have cost them £75m ($120m) in TV adverts, a 190% return on their investment.

Vodafone weren’t the biggest winners in the advertising stakes though, Red Bull’s TV time was valued at over £230m ($360m). This is thanks to the Red Bull and Toro Rosso teams’ (70% Red Bull/30% Toro Rosso).

Santander also did well with sponsorship of Ferrari, McLaren and several races during the season. The companies exposure was estimated to be worth over £64m ($100m) in 2010.
