Force India hoping to stay ahead of Williams

Sixth place in the constructors’ championship is a closely fought battle, one which is separated by just two points thanks to some strong finishes for Williams in the past few races.

Whilst Williams remain behind Force India, they have managed to score 11 points in the last two races, compared to the Silverstone based Force India’s two, quickly closing the gap.

Williams Sam Michael says the aim is to finish sixth, but admitted the car wouldn’t see any more upgrades this season.

“Sixth position is therefore what we are aiming to achieve in the final rounds,” said Michael. “We have no further developments planned for the FW32 for the remainder of the season.”

Whereas Force India’s Vitantonio Liuzzi revealed their car would, after highlighting qualifying as their weakness.

“We need to be quicker in qualifying if we are going to achieve our objective of beating Williams in the constructors’ championship,” he wrote in his ESPN column.

“In the second half of the season we have been struggling to get temperature into the tyres over one flying lap and that means we’ve started further back and sometimes got into trouble at the start.

“But, with only minor upgrades still to come to the car, we’re going to have to live with that problem a bit and just try to understand if there is a way we can limit it,” he added.

“On the plus side we had an upgrade to the floor of the car last weekend and that worked well, albeit just until the first corner for me. It was a good step forward and exactly the kind of thing we needed at Suzuka where downforce makes a big difference.

“But the team knows that we need to keep pushing if we are going to keep the pressure on Williams.”
