As expected, torrential rain lashed the Suzuka circuit allowing just two drivers to set a timed lap.
Jaime Alguersuari braved the weather to set a 1:55.902, with Timo Glock the only other driver to join him for a flying lap, over 11 seconds off the Spaniards time.
Several drivers attempted laps but decided against them. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton reported that the conditions were “unbelievable”.
Qualifying looks set to be postponed until Sunday if the weather remains the same, however FIA race director Charlie Whiting says he will attempt to start on time, but won’t hesitate to delay the session if need be.
