Vitaly Petrov will start the Italian grand prix from 20th on the grid after the FIA chose to penalise the Renault driver for holding up Timo Glock.
In the first qualifying session Petrov left the pits but failed to notice the Virgin coming up behind him. Glock vented his frustration as he pulled alongside the Russian with his hand in the air.
Petrov later apologised for the incident and admitted the race will be much harder starting in 20th rather than 15th thanks to a five-place grid penalty.
“I can only apologise to him if I held him up. I didn’t see him coming up behind me and didn’t see any blue flags as I came out of the pits.
“My grid penalty will make things even harder in the race but, as we saw in Spa, tomorrow is another day and a lot can still happen.”
