The Brazilian had a scary moment into the final bend as he ran wide narrowly missing the barrier before recovering to the pitlane.
The two McLaren’s came in fourth and fifth.
Mark Webber stopped on track with a loss of water pressure, curbing his running for the afternoon.
The surprise of the top ten was Rubens Barrichello, the Brazilian topped Robert Kubica’s Renault by just one thousandth of a second.
