Mark Webber was left with a bitter taste in his mouth on Saturday as Red Bull came under yet more fire for favouring Sebastian Vettel.
The Milton Keynes based team only had time to manufacture two new front-wings for the British GP – one for either driver.
An incident in third free practice saw Vettel damage his. Instead of reverting him back to the previous model for qualifying, the team removed the updated wing from Webber’s car, giving it to Vettel and fitting the old wing to the Australian’s car.
Team principal, Christian Horner, said the decision was made as he felt a duty to provide the championship leader with the latest parts.
“Unfortunately sometimes I have to make difficult decisions – and with only one wing available and the facts to hand that we had, and based on championship position – which was the criteria that we used – that wing went to Sebastian today,” he told the BBC.
This comes just weeks after the team blamed Webber when the two collided in Turkey, when clearly, according to many fans, pundits, commentators and ex-drivers, that Vettel was to blame.
